In Search of the Sun

June 13, 2013 § Leave a comment

After seeing another bleak forecast for the weekend in San Sebastián, we decided to head south for a little getaway. And I’m so glad we did! We arrived at the Finca Cortesin, a beautifully landscaped hotel overlooking the sea; Mediterranean in style but with a clean and fresh beach feeling. With two 50 meter sun-drenched swimming pools, a separate Euro-style beach club, a full-service Spa and a heated indoor swimming pool…we were in heaven. Upon walking into our room, we knew we would have a hard time leaving. The neutral palate was calming and tastefully done, the sitting room was spacious–not your typical european setting–and a large soaking tub would make Finn’s evenings complete. The view over the pools, past rolling hills and out to the brilliantly-blue sea was mesmerizing. The days were sunny and breezy and spent lounging by the pools (there was even a tiny one for Finny!) or on the beach with a glass of sangria. But, perhaps best of all was the food. Normally a disappointment at hotels, here everything was carefully prepared, beautifully presented and ultimately incredibly tasty. On our first night we called in a sitter & went down for a late dinner at the Japanese restaurant and enjoyed a decadent 15 course tasting menu of clams, tuna belly, steak tartare & pigeon all presented in classic Japanese style. Did i mention the seemingly bottomless Sake that accompanied? The rest of the time we enjoyed Mediterranean classics and Spanish specialties like Andalusian gazpacho and seafood paella. Our last evening we sat in our room over a beautifully set table and an amazing view while Finn slept soundly in the next room. It doesn’t get much better than this! If you find yourself in Europe, this is a summer retreat not to be missed.
